What is a Coil?

The coil serves as the core heating element, typically crafted from metal wire and cotton. The cotton, known as the wicking material, absorbs e-liquid within the metal casing. When powered by the battery, the wire coil heats up, vaporizing the soaked e-liquid to produce the inhalable vapor. Coils vary in design and material, directly influencing the flavor and vapor density experienced. They can be integrated into the tank or pod as a permanent fixture or replaced as a separate, interchangeable component based on user preference.

What is resistance (Ohms) in vaping?

Resistance refers to the level of opposition that a coil presents to the flow of electrical current. Measured in Ohms (Ω), it determines how much current can pass through the coil when voltage is applied. The formula I = V / R illustrates this relationship, where I represents current, V stands for voltage, and R denotes resistance.

In practical terms, higher voltage relative to resistance results in greater current flow through the coil, characteristic of Sub Ohm coils. These coils offer less resistance, producing warmer vapor and more intense flavor. Conversely, coils with higher resistance, such as those around 1.0Ω, restrict current flow, leading to cooler vapor with a subtler flavor profile. Vapers often choose their coils based on desired vapor temperature and flavor intensity.

What is Mouth to Lung (MTL) vaping?

MTL vaping mimics the sensation of smoking a cigarette, where vapor is drawn into the mouth first before being inhaled into the lungs. This style is popular among individuals transitioning from smoking to vaping, seeking a familiar experience. It is best achieved with a higher resistance coil, typically categorized as Standard coils.

Coils with a higher resistance range (0.7Ω – 1.2Ω ) are ideal for MTL vaping, offering a tighter draw and cooler vapor temperature. Key features of MTL vaping include:

  • Enhanced flavor when paired with higher PG liquids.
  • Produces smaller clouds for discreet vaping.
  • Reduced e-liquid consumption due to lower vaporization temperatures
  • Longer battery life, as less electrical current is required for operation, maximizing usage between charges.

What is Restricted Direct Lung (RDL) vaping?

Restricted Direct Lung (RDL) vaping provides a balanced experience between Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct to Lung (DTL) styles. Unlike MTL, RDL involves a slightly looser draw that doesn't go directly to the lungs. This style offers a middle ground, combining enhanced flavor and cloud production.

Coils with a resistance range of 0.5Ω – 0.8Ω are ideal for RDL vaping, providing:

  • More flavor intensity compared to Direct to Lung (DTL) vaping.
  • Increased vapor production compared to Mouth to Lung (MTL) vaping, making it suitable for users who prefer a more robust vaping experience.

What is Direct to Lung (DTL) vaping?

Direct to Lung (DTL) vaping is favored by experienced vapers, involving inhaling vapor directly into the lungs. This style features a loose draw and delivers a warm, rich flavor profile. DTL vaping is known for producing substantial clouds.

Coils with a resistance below 0.5Ω are optimal for DTL vaping, offering:

  • Significant cloud production, ideal for cloud chasers.
  • Enhanced nicotine delivery, which can reduce the need for higher nicotine strength e-liquids due to the intense vapor experience.
  • Customizability through sub-ohm vaping with advanced Box mods, allowing adjustments in airflow and vaping modes. More airflow generates larger clouds with slightly reduced flavor, while restricted airflow enhances flavor intensity with smaller clouds.

Why is priming a coil important in vaping?

Priming a coil is essential for prolonging its lifespan and avoiding dry hits when using a new coil. For coils that are separate from the tank or pod, apply e-liquid or nicotine salt directly onto the exposed cotton to ensure it's thoroughly saturated. After saturating the cotton, reassemble the coil into the tank or pod and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes. This waiting period ensures the cotton absorbs enough e-liquid before vaping.

For integrated coils (non-removable), simply fill the pod with e-liquid and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes before using for the first time.

When using a device with adjustable wattage, it's recommended to start at a lower wattage setting initially. Take a few gentle puffs to further ensure proper saturation before adjusting the wattage to your preferred level for vaping. This method helps maintain optimal coil performance and enhances the overall vaping experience.

Why does my vape taste burnt, especially with a new coil?

If your vapor tastes burnt when using a new coil, it's likely due to insufficient priming. The cotton wick inside the coil must be thoroughly saturated with e-liquid or nicotine salt to prevent it from burning. This can also occur if the wattage on your device is set too high for the new coil or if you vape continuously without pauses, causing the wick to dry out and burn.

Additionally, using a liquid that is too thick for your device can lead to burnt flavors. For instance, using nicotine salt e-liquid in a device not designed for it can result in a burnt taste.

How long does a coil typically last?

Coil lifespan varies based on usage frequency and other factors. Generally, a coil lasts about 1 to 2 weeks. Factors that can shorten coil lifespan include using sweeter or higher VG liquids, higher power settings on your device, and the quality of the coil itself. Regularly priming your coils and maintaining proper vaping practices can help maximize their longevity.

When should I replace my coil?

Coils typically need replacement every 1 to 2 weeks, although this can vary based on your vaping frequency, habits, power settings, and the coil's quality. Factors such as using sweeter or higher VG liquids, higher power outputs, and the overall quality of the coil can shorten its lifespan.

It's important to replace a coil immediately if you notice a burnt taste during vaping. This indicates that the coil is no longer effectively vaporizing the e-liquid and has likely reached the end of its usable lifespan. Regularly replacing coils ensures a consistent and enjoyable vaping experience while preventing potential burnt or unpleasant flavors.

When should I use nicotine salts in vaping?

Nicotine salts are best used in MTL vaping setups with coil resistances ranging from 0.7Ω to 1.2Ω. They are particularly suitable for lower power devices like pod kits and are often paired with higher resistance coils. Nicotine salts are favored by individuals transitioning from cigarettes due to their higher nicotine strength and ability to provide a smooth throat hit, replicating the sensation of smoking more closely compared to traditional freebase nicotine e-liquids.
