Do sweet e-liquids reduce coil life?

Sweeter e-liquids do indeed tend to make vape coils go bad faster!

Impact of Sweet E-Liquids on Coil Life

Caramelization and Residue Buildup

Sweetened e-liquids typically contain sucralose or other sweeteners that don't fully vaporize when heated. Instead, these sweeteners tend to caramelize and stick to the coil, leaving behind a residue. This residue builds up over time, gunking up the coil and reducing its life span.

A typical coil may last about a week for heavy users, and with very sweet e-liquids coil life can be reduced to just 3 days, especially when vaping at high wattages.

As the sweetener residue accumulates on the coil, it can start to burn when heated, leading to an unpleasant burnt taste. This often necessitates changing the coil sooner than you would with less sweet e-liquids.

If you enjoy sweet e-liquids but want to maximize your coil life, consider the following:

  • Use less sweetened or unsweetened e-liquids
  • Try fruit-based or menthol/mint flavors, which tend to be gentler on coils
  • Clean your tank regularly to remove residue buildup\
  • Prime new coils properly before use
  • Consider using a device with high-quality coils designed for longevity

Other ways to extend coil life

Use premium brands

Premium brands often use fewer sweeteners compared to budget e-liquids.

PG/VG Ratio

E-liquids with a higher proportion of Propylene Glycol (PG) are generally better for coil longevity. PG has a thinner consistency, which is less likely to clog coils compared to high VG e-liquids. Typically a 50/50 PG/VG ratio, or nicotine salt formulations are recommended.
